Prague Old World Charm
Prague is a city of artists. The Charles Bridge is covered with artists selling paintings and other art. Musicians set up in the square and on the bridge and perform many types of music from opera to jazz.
We went to Prague and as a family of three ate every night for about $20.00. The food was great. My husband scoped out the Budvar Beer Hall and led me and my son to a large wooden table. We had the traditional Czech meal of goulash, my son had a great chicken noodle soup, both were delicious and the beer was as good as advertised.
Prague has three Opera houses. The Estates Theater is where Mozart’s Don Giovanni premiered. Prague is also home of the Marionette and has numerous Black Light Theaters. We were adventurous and went to a Black Light Theater. It was really interesting the entire 90 minute play was based on Beatle Music and pantomime. A Black Light Theater is a small stage lit with a black light and puppeteers move florescent objects in the background in a manner that makes them look suspended in midair.
I think Prague is a sogonow location because although they have joined the E.U. they haven’t switched to the euro yet. Once the switch is made prices will go up, usually by about 40%. (A beer is about $1.40 U.S. in Prague and in the E.U. countries a beer is $4.00 U.S.)
I also think Prague is a sogonow location because we were fortunate enough to go up into the Powder Tower and the Clock Tower, these sites are small, I would expect both locations to become more exclusive in time as they will be unable to withstand a huge crush of tourists. The entire Old Town has retained its old world charm in the picturesque medieval buildings, cobblestone streets and sidewalks.
Prague has so many interesting sites and amazing activities and things will change as they become more westernized. The time to go to Prague is now.
You will not regret the trip and when your friends venture to Prague 10 years from now you can say things like “I remember when you could…….”
Five Amazing Hiking Trails in Arizona
Everyone knows that you can go to Arizona and hike the Grand Canyon, but what about other trails? There is plenty of great hiking in Arizona that has nothing to do with jockeying for position at the Grand Canyon. Many of them are difficult, but they reward with beauty that is seldom matched anywhere in the world. Here are five of the best.
Wet Beaver Loop. This trail is extremely difficult, but it is an amazing hike in the Wet Beaver Wilderness Area. The trip is 22 miles round trip and needs more than one day to complete. Do not bring children on this trail. It is punctuated by camps, Waldroup canyon (stunning), and waterfalls. You will get wet when you do this hike. In fact, a portion of the hike is done entirely walking through water. You make a large loop to come back out where you began.
Picacho Peak. This hike is not too far from Casa Grande, and provides a stunning view of the Sonora desert from the top. The hike is very steep at times, and there are numerous switchbacks. The trail is seven miles round trip, unless you take the alternate trail to return from the peak (adding an extra couple of miles).
It is advisable to wear gloves on this hike and you may need to use steel cables to aid your climb at times. You must be in good physical condition to undertake this hike as some Class 3 climbing will be necessary.
Kendrick Mountain. This is a moderately easy trail, involving a 9.2 miles round trip. You will be able to look at a cabin and encounter some spectacular views of Mount Humphreys, Red Mountain, Sycamore Canyon, and also the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Towards the end of this trail, there are a series of short switchbacks which will also provide some amazing views.
Paria Canyon. This hike starts in Utah, but right near the border, and immediately moves into Arizona. The road to the trailhead is frequently washed out, and so you need to keep a sharp eye on the weather to avoid flash floods. And, because the trail ends far away from the car, it's nice to take advantage of a shuttle for the ride back, especially since this a multi-day trip. Additionally, as you will be going through wilderness area, you will need to obtain a permit from the BLM.
After the rains the trail gets muddy and prone to quicksand so you will have to pick around a bit. Once you actually get into the canyon, the trail disappears and you have to follow the river. You will be walking through a narrow slot canyon with spectacular formation. It is advisable not to take the trip if rain is forecast for any of the days that you plan to be hiking, because once you are in the Narrows you won't be able to escape flash floods.
Other fantastic features include a cave "room" in one of the walls, Wrather Canyon (along with Wrather Arch), Judd Hollow, and other canyons and routes, as well as springs. The views and formations along this hike are amazing and worth the trip.
